Snapshots #1

I have been having problem with my inspiration. Which is why I written and deleted the short intro I wanted for this post too many times. Words are just not forming into right sentences for me. Not in Icelandic, not in English and even not in my dreams where I have been mixing all my languages together.

It might be just exhaustion from the stress and the effort that went into writing my BA essay, which I why I decided to take a break from writing and creating for a month. For that month I focused on getting my life organized and I can honestly say that I succeeded. Or I think so, I still am waiting for a confirmation on what I will be doing next semester. But generally, I got things under control.

Usually when I have things under control I can write and I can create. But this time around everything is sucking. When I can write a sentence or two, they are absolutely horrible. Instead I have been reading, baking, and of course talking long walks.

Which brings me to what I actually wanted to write about today, on my walks I have been taking pictures of what is around me and I wanted to share them somehow without overflowing my Instagram account of random pictures of Reykjavík. Instead I decided that I wanted to post once in awhile on this abandoned blog my pictures, seeing if that will push me into being inspired again. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. We'll see.

That's all.

Trashy Reykjavík

I wanted to talk about something I have noticed here in Reykjavík, I might be bit biased because Geneva was kept clean, the streets were cleaned twice a day and there were trash cans everywhere! I feel like the attitude towards trash in Reykjavík is a bit different like the nature should just take care of all the trash that is thrown at it. First of all I haven't seen or heard a street cleaner since I came here, and second of all where are all the trash cans?

I arrived to Reykjavík about a week after the Gay Pride Parade, and there were still gigantic pieces of confetti everywhere. And even now I still see some confetti flying around. It wouldn't be so noticeable but that confetti is made out of plastic and isn't going to disappear anytime soon.

Only if the trash problem in Reykjavík ended there, which is doesn't. Reykjavík is extremely trashy and I am shocked that people aren't more ashamed of it! Because this is something tourist will notice and it doesn't really show a great picture of Iceland.

I walk around quite a lot, since it is something I am used to and something I like doing and during couple of those walks I have picked up a piece of trash planning on throwing it into the next trashcan only to end up holding on to it until I reach my destination.

And on one of those walks I actually decided to take couple of pictures of the trash that was lying around, I started just taking couple put at the moment I have tons of them on my phone! There is just so much trash everywhere!

So I ask myself, is this what Icelandic people want the tourists to remember? And why aren't there any trash cans?

Iceland - Deildartunguhver

Since I grew up in Iceland I just LOVE hot springs, I used to play in and around hot springs when I was growing up. Yes that does sounds stupid and crazy but we knew what hot springs were dangerous and what hot springs were good for playing.

Some information about Deildartunguhver, the water that comes out of the hot spring is 97°C (207°F) hot and there are 180 liters (47.5 gallons) of water coming out of that hot spring per second! By that standard it is the highest flow hot spring in Europe!

It is as well the only habitat for a type of fern in whole Iceland! Pretty impressive!

It was pretty hard trying to take pictures of this steamy awesomeness! The colours were amazing, the reds were super red and the greens were luscious green. Just amazing!

 Bisous.

P.S. Check out my other pictures from Iceland.

Iceland - Barnafoss

Barnafossar  is one of the many sights in Iceland that have a sad story connected to it. Barnafossar where previously known as Bjarnafossar, but they had a name change after two children died when they fell into the waterfall.

The story is that once up on a time there was a natural bridge over the waterfall and two boys lived with their mother on a farm nearby. The mother was a widow and had workers helping on the farm. One Christmas, the mother and the workers go for a mass in a church close by and the two boys got to stay behind. When the mother came back she noticed the boys were gone, they followed the footsteps in the snow and realized the boys must have fallen into the waterfall. The mother told the workers to break down the natural bridge over the falls and said that now no one could ever cross the waterfall alive ever again.

This part of the waterfall was completely frozen, it was quite haunting since it looked like the water was moving but it was just ice.

And it started to snow - Iceland

Since I got here it has been raining the entire time but this morning when I woke up there was no wind and it was snowing like mad. I went out and  took some pictures. I still have about 2-3 posts from Iceland that I need to finish writing and editing but I just wanted to let these pictures speak for themselves.

Iceland - Hraunfossar

Hraunfossar are a series of waterfalls that come from rivers that are flowing underneath the lava fields around  it. In Icelandic hraun means lava and fossar is waterfalls. The water joins a overground river after these magnificent waterfalls that is called Hvítá (meaning white river).

The water is glacier water and comes from the nearest glacier Langjökull  (meaning long glacier). The water has this amazing blue colour that these pictures don't show well enough and you just really want to jump in because the water looks so welcoming.

It has been super cloudy and rainy here in Iceland since I arrived, it is nice and warm today (10°C/50F) and raining! Strange for January!

There will be a lot of more picture posts from Iceland since I will be here for 10 more days!

Iceland

After Helsinki I went quickly to Iceland. It was so nice to see my family and some friends again. I was there for way to short time and sadly didn't manage to see everyone that I wanted to see. I did manage to eat some serious amount of ice cream so all in all it was a good trip. I don't know when I'll be able to go there next time, I usually manage to go once a year.

As you can see on the pictures it was quite gloomy, on the Friday night it rained and rained and rained! But on Saturday it was still gloomy.
