100 Things Decluttering Challenge: 1-25

Today I started to go though some of the stuff that I have but don't want to have. I chose to start in the kitchen and recycle some glassware and other things I just don't use!

In there are 12 small Jam Jars and some jar lids (counted all the lids as one thing), 3 cups, 3 glasses, 1 shot glass, a glass bottle and some empty tea tins.

I haven't bought anything since I started so there has nothing been coming in!

Off to a great start! 25 things gone, 75 still left!

100 Things Decluttering Challenge

You might wonder didn't I just do a decluttering challenge? Yes, but I have a big problem with clutter and I hate it! So I wanted to go for a new challenge, this time there isn't any time limit just stuff limit.

I want to throw away/donate/reuse/sell 100 things!

I won't count trash as part of the 100 things, they have to be things. So clothing, pens, shoes, socks, make-up and skincare and all these kind of things.

I am not going to count my empties (Make-up and skincare that I finish) since I go through quite a lot of them and could easily just finish products without decluttering anything!

I will count when I finish pens, paint and that kind of things (since I do have a problem with hoarding pens and paint).

And by reusing mean to take things apart and make something else, it doesn't count if I put them in my reuse pile, they have to be fully reused!

The reason why I want to do this is because I am sick of my clutter, I still just have so many things and I need to keep on going through them and sort out the things I want and the things I don't need.

I have been very good since my 100 Days of Decluttering Challenge at not buying things I don't need but I can still improve myself!

Therefore, during my 100 Things Decluttering Challenge I will as well post about the things that I have bought, to see what is going out and what is coming in. I am not on a spending ban or anything like that I am just going to keep an eye on the things I am buying (doesn't include groceries and other necessities)

If you want to take part in this challenge with me don't hesitate! It is going to be fun!

Things I Have Hit Pan On - Part I

I wanted to do a quick post about the products that I have hit pan on! As you might have noticed I love finishing products so I thought this might be a good idea! I will only mention each product once but with for example the MUA Eye Shadow Pallet I will show when I hit pan on each colour (probably won't ever happen), and the same goes for my other eye shadows that are couple of colours together!

This can't be a monthly thing or a regular thing since I never really know when I will hit pan on a product!

Clinique - Almost Powder Makeup (Shade 01 Fair) is my go to powder so I was both happy and sad to see that I hit pan on it. I am certain it will be in my Empties pile when the summer is over.

The Clinique - Stay-Matte Sheer Pressed Powder Oil-Free (Shade 02 Stay Neutral) used to be my to go powder but since I started using spf 50 everyday it got too dark for my skin, now I only use it for eye shadow and that is why the pan is in the corner but not in the middle.  I don't think I will ever finish this one!

I won the MUA Undressed Palette in a giveaway and have been using it on and off for couple of months, the only shade that I have hit pan on is shade 1. I am not even close to hit pan with the other shades.

And at last I have hit pan (or the bottom) on my Aloe Vera Gel from Naissance, I wrote a review about it here and will probably finish it by the end of this or next month!

So that are the products I have hit the pan on. There are couple that I believe that I will soon hit pan on but I am not really sure!

Seven for the Rainbow: Yellow

I was super exited to take part in a blogger collaboration with the rainbow tag until I got the color yellow. I swore a bit because the truth is I don't really like yellow and I was certain I had nothing that would even be close to being yellow. I did some digging around and found somethings that have something to do with yellow! I don't have a lot because I try to stay away from yellow products!

Carmex Moisturizing Lip Balm
The lip balm itself isn't really yellow, but the lid is so it counts! I haven't really used this lip balm that much since I am finishing my other lip balms but this one is cruelty free and I do like it.

Claire's Cosmetics Chip Resistant - B57 (Reviewed Here
This is my only yellow nail polish! I can't really say much about it, I reviewed it a while ago

Migros - I am Natural Cosmetics - Shower Exfoliator
I know that it is only the bottle on this one that has something yellow but the ingredients sound yellow as well! It has lime and citrus oil in it! It is a great exfoliator and smells like citrus fruits and just wakens you up in the morning!

Cinq Mondes Soins Du Spa  - Rituels D'Aromacologie - Rituel du Siam -  Aromatic Shower and Bath Oil with Bergamot and Gaiac Wood Essential Oils
Even with its super long name (in two languages on the bottle) this has to be one of my favorite bath oil, it foams nicely but not too much and it just smells divine. My skin is super soft when I get out of the bath!

Don't forget to check out the other girls that took part in this blogger collaboration!

My Hair: Going No 'Poo

Many people know about no 'poo and many people don't. No 'poo means no shampoo and it is just a simple decision of not washing your hair with shampoo.

I stopped using shampoo on 5th of December 2011 and haven't turned back. At first I went with the backing soda and apple vinegar method but soon realized that wasn't something for me. So I decided to become a water only hair washer. Water only is exactly what it sounds, I only use water to wash my hair.

I use other things as well in daily life, I dye my hair regularly (but wash the excess colour out with water), I use aloe vera gel, coconut oil, camomile tea, tea tree oil, honey and pretty much everything that I want to use, except for things like shampoo, conditioner and anything you can buy in the hair aisle.

You might wonder why I haven't written much more about my hair and the truth is that some days I feel so shitty about my hair that I want to turn back to shampoo but then I remember, I hated my hair when I used shampoo and my hair looks pretty awesome now.

And that is the main point of it all, my scalp and hair were awful when I used shampoo. My scalp was itchy (I have eczema "attacks") and I constantly had scabs on my scalp so sometimes when I used shampoo it stung so badly. During one of those "attacks" I decided that I needed to stop using shampoo, and many many many months later I actually stopped!

After I stopped I rarely get eczema anymore, I do sometimes but it never reaches the point of my scalp bleeding!
There are two questions people always ask me when I tell them I don´t use shampoo, the first one is does your hair smell and the second one don't you miss shampoo.

Does my hair smell? No, which is something I love, I hated having the chemical smell of shampoo stuck in my hair! My hair never smells like a wet dog or wet sheep or anything. My hair is scent free!

Do I miss using shampoo? Sometimes yes but most of the time not at all. As I mentioned before I sometimes do have bad hair days but not as bad and not as often as before.

All of the pictures are since I stopped using shampoo!

P.S. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!

Book Review: The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

I have so many books that I need to review but I somehow can't get into the right mood to write them! But I shall change that by forcing myself to actually write them.

I wanted to start by reviewing The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I picked up this book because it was recommended to me by so many people. I wasn't really sure because I'm not a big fan of needy women books, and especially not when they are written by women that should know better than to write a book that is just horribly demeaning towards women!

With that kind of intro you might have figured out what I actually think about this book but I am still going to review it like I review (almost) every book I read! Let's start with the synopsis on the back of the book.
A most untraditional love story, this is the celebrated tale of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who involuntary travels through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate affair endures across sea of time and captures them in an impossibly romantic trap that tests the strength of fate and basks in the bonds of love.
I should have known with that kind of synopsis that this wasn't a book for me! Henry is dashing, adventuresome and Clare is an artist who has a natural sequenced life. Why can't Clare be the adventuresome character? Why does she have to be the stay at home and worry character? Why does Clare have to be the weak character, why can't she be the hero? Why is Clare only life goal to be with Henry? These are the questions that constantly jumped at me during the whole book.

It isn't that the story isn't a great story, it has potential. But instead of working on these potentials the story just goes into the "weak woman strong man" road and doesn't even once derive from that.

Anyways, the book is written in 1st person and is from the viewpoint of Clare and Henry, most of the chapters have couple of sections that are about the time-travel. For example chapter one is called First Date, One and the first section is called Saturday, October 26, 1991 (Henry is 28, Clare is 20) and part of that section is from Clare's point of view and part from Henry's point of view. The second sections is called Later that evening and it is only from Henry's point of view. The third section is called The next morning and that section is from Clare's point of view.
CLARE: It's a humid sticky hot Sunday afternoon, and Henry, Gomez, and I are at large in Evanston. We spent the morning at Lighthouse Beach, playing in Lake Michigan and roasting ourselves. Gomez wanted to be buried in the sand, so Henry and I obliged. We ate our picnic, and napped. Now we are walking down the shady side of Church Street, licking Orangsicles, groggy with sun. (Page 295)
HENRY: Today was Moving Day. All day it was hot; the movers' shirts stuck to them as they walked up the stairs of our apartment this morning, smiling because they figured a two-bedroom apartment would be no big deal and they'd be done before lunch time. (Page 294)
Only two quotes this time, since there wasn't anything that I found amazing about the book. No words stood out to me, I wasn't inspired about anything in the book.

And at last, would I recommend this book to anyone? No, I am sick of weak female characters in literature and I definitely wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Review: Naissance - Aloe Vera Gel

I am always on the hunt for some great aloe vera gels! I just want something that is as natural as possible. I use aloe vera gel mostly for my scalp when I want to add more volume to my hair! However this is not a post about that (I will definitely write hair post one day), this post will be about the Aloe Vera Gel from Naissance. I ordered this gel because I have been looking for aloe vera gel without Benzyl Alcohol and with as few extra ingredients as possible.

I thought I had hit the jackpot with this Aloe Vera Gel from Naissance the ingredients are phenoxyethanol, vegetable glycerine, Carbomer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium hydroxide and Dinatrium EDTA.
One problem I find with the ingredients is that they are only written on the German amazon webpage, not on the UK webpage, not on their own webpage and not on the jar! So I can't really be sure that these are the right ingredients!

Not to many ingredients and they didn't look that bad at first glance. However, when I first opened the jar the stench of toothpaste came from the Aloe Vera Gel. They say that the gel should be without fragrances, colours, parabens or sulphates and that is just wrong. It still smells like toothpaste (nasty chemical minty) even though I have almost finished the jar!

The second thing is that this gel has the strangest texture, it doesn't feel like real Aloe Vera Gel, it feels too chemical and fake. It is hart to explain the texture but somehow it just feels wrong.

I will definitely NOT buy another jar from Naissance (or eNaissance) or anything else from them since I do not trust their company any more!

If you know about a good Aloe Vera Gel please let me know so I can order some :)

Review: Alba Botanica - Natural ACNEdote - Oil Control Lotion

Today I will be reviewing another skincare product, this one I had to order online and I did so because I really wanted to try some things from Alba Botanica!

Alba Botanica is a cruelty free company that have 100% vegetarian ingredients and  they never use parabens, sulfates, or phthalates in their products!

First I would like to mention what Alba Botanica believes this lotion will do:
Take your shine to the matte. In your corner: the ultimate, acne fighting, mattifying lotion with max strength 2% salicylic acid. This powerfully natural, botanically effective, oil-free formula keeps shine at bay while it weightlessly hydrates skin. Formulated with Salicylic Acid (naturally derived from Willow Bark Extract), zits are down for the count and you'll see a visibly clearer complexion. Never tight, never oily, skin is smooth, fresh and prepped for your day (or night). Dermatologist Tested. Non-comedogenic.
I don't have super shiny skin, but it is too shiny for my liking so I really wanted to try a mattifying lotion. I still want to try a mattifying lotion because the ACNEdote oil control lotion isn't mattifying at all.

The second claim the make is that the "zits are down for the count and you'll see a visibly clearer complexion".  I can't really confirm or deny this one since my skin has been odd for the past 3 months so I am not sure if the cream is helping or not. I have noticed my acne is quicker to go away again (but that could as well be down to other things I have been using).

At last, I think my biggest problem with this lotion is how it smells, it is revolting. I have to hold my breath when I put this on in the morning and the scent stays for some time!

The positive thing about this lotion is that my skin doesn't feel tight or oily, but that is about it.

I am going to continue to buy things from Alba Botanica but I think I will stay away from the ACNEdote collection!

3. Do a Photo an Hour challenge every month (12 times December 2012 - November 2013)
I did do one in February and March, I did mention that if I managed to do 12, no matter the month I would be happy, so I might start doing more when things start slowing down again!
4. Read books that start with all the letters of the alphabet (a-z) and review them.
You can see the full list here, I have read 11 of 26, and I think there might be one missing from that list.
5. Read books that by authors last name (a-z) and review them.
You can see the full list here, I have read 9 of 26, but as mentioned above there might be one missing.

6. Start an inspirational book.
Hasn't happened yet, but I did start writing in a diary again.
7. Sew seven pieces of clothing.
Hasn't happened yet.

24. Do the 200 sit-up challenge
I am doing this one on and off, at the moment I have passed 100 sit-ups so I think I will finish the 200 sit-up challenge in the Autumn.
25. Not gain weight
I have gained a bit of weight, which is annoying me. But if I go back down to 74.4kg (164 lbs) before my birthday it won't have been a failure!

Review: Weleda - Pomegranate Firming Serum - Renews and Tightens

As you might have noticed I am being absorbed into skincare! The reason why there is so much of skincare reviews on my blog at the moment is because I finished all my old skincare things couple of months ago. Therefore, I am buying all these new skincare products and I just need to share! You can read my previous skincare posts here.

Today I wanted to tell you about my serum. I have tried couple of other serum but always only samples and there wasn't one that I really liked! I had been eyeing the Pomegranate Firming Serum from Weleda for some time now but I never found a sample from them so I didn't know how it was. I still decided to go for it and I can tell you now that I don't regret it!

I want to start with the ingredients. I do look at the ingredients in all my beauty product and I am trying not to buy things that have ingredients I don't like. But with the Pomegranate Firming Serum I took a chance, the problem is that the second ingredient is Alcohol.

Water (Aqua), Alcohol, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Fruit Juice, Panicum Miliaceum (Millet) Seed Extract, Prunus Spinosa (Blackthorn) Wood Extract, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Limonene*, Linalool*, Geraniol*, Citral*, Coumarin*.
* from natural essential oils

The serum still doesn't smell like alcohol and it hasn't dried out my skin. Quite the opposite, my skin looks and feels amazing!

On the Weleda homepage they say that:

As we get older, our skin seems to slow down. But what if we could help our skin continue to function at its best? We can, with this Pomegranate Firming Serum. Containing a blend of highly effective natural ingredients, Weleda Pomegranate Firming Serum is the ideal companion to your skin’s natural aging process.
Containing organic golden millet, rich in vitamin E, and precious organic pomegranate juice, rich in antioxidants, this intensive treatment actively aids your skin’s own ability to regenerate. Weleda Pomegranate Firming Serum helps reduce signs of aging while deeply moisturizing.
A skin essential, our Pomegranate Firming Serum is ideal for use before the Pomegranate Firming Day Cream and Pomegranate Firming Night Cream.
Dermatological tests shown that wrinkles are reduced by 29%* after 28 days and skin moisture levels increased by 39% after 30mn** when using Weleda Pomegranate Firming Serum.
*Measurement of depth of wrinkles with PRIMOS, test with 20 subjects between 41 – 65 years of age, application of the product twice daily for 28 days.
**Measurement of skin moisture with a corneometer, test with 23 subjects between 41 – 70 years of age, 30 minutes after application
I have been using the serum for about 2 months (only in the evening) and I can really say that my skin has gotten better! I had some annoying wrinkles by my temples and they are pretty much gone now! I don't have any dry patches and my skin hasn't started to be extra oily. I use it after I use the Migros - I am - Natural Cosmetics - Cornflower Toner and before I use the Kneipp - Aloe Vera Face Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin  and I really can say my skin has benefited from this serum.
I know that this serum is meant for people over forty, but I feel it is a great serum for me. It smells amazing and is absorbed quickly into the skin. It hasn't caused any breakouts, dryness or any other bad things. I will definitely keep on using the Pomegranate Firming Serum and I finally feel like I found a go to skincare product for me!

Review: Migros - I am Natural Cosmetics - Green Tea and Lemon Grass Scrub / Exfoliator

Another product from the I am Natural Cosmetics skincare line from Migros. Today I will be talking about their Green Tea and Lemon Grass Exfoliator (Scrub) for all skin types.

On the bottle it is both in German (Grüner Tee, Zitronengras - Peeling - Alle Hauttypen, sanfte & belebende Reiningun) and French (Thé Vert, Citronnelle - Peeling - tout types de peaux - nettoyage douceur stimulant)

On the back it says (translated from German):
Exfoliating particles with the finest bamboo particles and organic green tea and lemongrass extracts. Removes dead skin cells and impurities gently. The skin appearance is refined, the skin feels soft. Use one or twice per week.

As with most (if not all) of the items from the I am Natural Cosmetics line it is without mineral oils, artificial color, fragrance and preservatives.

I love the scent of this product, it smells exactly like lemon grass (a scent I LOVE), my skin feels really soft after using it and I would say more refined. The only problem I am having is that the bamboo particles are just too fine! I just feel like it doesn't scrub enough, I like to feel like I am scrubbing my face. This one just feels like I am lightly massaging my face with a hit of exfoliation. For the price of it (8.50 Franks/75 ml) I just wish for more of bamboo particles, just so that I can feel like I am really exfoliating my face!

So my search continues for an exfoliator that will be as good as the Yves Rocher - Clean Skin Scrub with Apricot Seed (Reviewed), but if you like a very gentle exfoliator I would recommend this one from Migros.

The I am Natural Cosmetics - Green Tea and Lemon Grass Scrub / Exfoliator  can be bought in Migros for 8.50 Franks (75ml)
